Independent specialist re/insurance broker Miller has announced the appointment of three senior hires to its newly established M&A and Strategic Solutions (MASS) team.
The team will be led globally by Andrew Johnson (pictured above, left) and Edwina Charlton (pictured above, right), with Rupert Newman joining as head of broking.
In addition to transactional risk insurance, the team will focus on building dedicated tax and contingent risk practices. Miller said that the goal is to develop a full-service team outside North America. Johnson will also work with the broader business on its growth initiatives.
Johnson, Charlton, and Newman bring experience from legal, banking, restructuring, and broking backgrounds. Johnson and Charlton both started their careers as M&A lawyers in London and Asia, with a combined 20 years of experience before transitioning into insurance at Marsh.
The MASS team will operate within Miller’s professional & financial risks division and will be based in London. The team will provide advisory services to private equity firms, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds, corporates, law firms, and corporate financiers, focusing on domestic and cross-border risks across multiple industry sectors.
Laura McDonough, head of professional and financial risks at Miller, said that the MASS team is supported by colleagues in the Asia-Pacific region and recent additional hires in London.
Miller’s expansion into the sector comes as transactional risk insurance experiences notable growth, driven by an active M&A landscape and evolving risk management strategies.
While global M&A fell to a 16-year low in 2024, experts note that it is headed for a rebound this year led by the US, where investor confidence has strengthened.
A report from Clyde & Co suggests that deregulation and a lower cost of capital could drive acquisitions both domestically and internationally. Foreign interest in the US excess and surplus (E&S) market is predicted to rise, while US insurers may look abroad for underpriced assets, supported by a strong dollar.
Meanwhile, Miller has also notably expanded its reinsurance operations with the appointment of Vincent Foucart as managing director in its reinsurance division.
