A former NFL player has been indicted by a Texas grand jury on charges of insurance fraud.
Narond “Roc” Alexander has been accused of submitting fraudulent claims totaling more than $25,000 to a health plan for former NFL players. An investigation found that the claims were for medical treatments he had never received, according to the Texas Department of Insurance.
Alexander allegedly submitted the claims between 2014 and 2018 under the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Plan. The program helps pay certain medical expenses for former NFL players.
A grand jury in Bexar County, Texas, handed down the indictment. If convicted, Alexander faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
“Insurance fraud hurts the people who actually need those funds to cover their healthcare costs, like the NFL players who benefit from this particular fund,” said Joe Gonzalez, Bexar County district attorney. “This indictment allows us to seek justice on behalf of the NFL players with legitimate claims who rely on these funds.”
Alexander signed with the Denver Broncos in 2004 and later played for the Houston Texans.
