The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) is set to sponsor a free foundational course on Bermuda’s insurance and reinsurance market for the fifth consecutive year.
The program, conducted in collaboration with Bermuda College and the Maurice R Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science at St. John’s University, aims to provide Bermudian students and members of the public with insights into the industry and potential career pathways.
The “Special Topics in Insurance” course, which starts on Jan. 13, will feature weekly online sessions conducted via Zoom.
This year, ABIR has added two new partners to the program: Lloyd’s, the long-standing global insurance and reinsurance marketplace, and The Institutes Knowledge Group, a provider of online education and designations in insurance and risk management. Each will lead one of the 14 sessions.
According to the Royal Gazette, the course is designed to introduce participants to the Bermuda re/insurance market’s operations, its role in global risk management, and emerging trends. Participants may register for individual sessions or the full course through the Bermuda College website.
Craig Simmons, retired senior lecturer at Bermuda College, will return to lead the course. Sessions will include contributions from St John’s University faculty and senior executives from ABIR member companies. The opening session will feature a roundtable discussion on the socio-economic impact of Bermuda’s international business sector.
Lloyd’s session will focus on the marketplace’s operations and the unique risk transfer solutions it offers. The Institutes Knowledge Group will explore trends in artificial intelligence and its applications in insurance and risk management.
ABIR president and CEO John Huff (pictured above) said the sponsorship reflects the organization’s commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive workforce.
“ABIR’s sponsorship of this course is a testament to our member companies’ commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce,” Huff said.
Dawn Miller, chief commercial officer of Lloyd’s and CEO of Lloyd’s Americas, said that the collaboration between Lloyd’s and ABIR underscores the importance of knowledge-sharing between two leading insurance markets.
“Partnering with Abir through the Lloyd’s Academy highlights the importance of two leading insurance markets – Lloyd’s and Bermuda – coming together to share expertise and drive progress in addressing global risks,” Miller said.
