“While buzzvault can’t change the entire industry alone, we can lead by example and show how we’re taking real action to address gender diversity through our #buzzingfor50 campaign.”
These were the words of buzzvault insurance founder and chief executive Becky Downing (pictured), whose business has 50% female representation at an executive level but aims to achieve the same gender balance across the organisation by the end of next year. Part of its campaign is getting involved with the likes of Women Who Code, Driven Women, Beyond the Classroom, and the Geek Girls Meet Up.
Last week, four male and four female members of the buzzvault team joined a Geek Girls Meet Up event in London. Downing, contributing to the discussion on female entrepreneurship, was on hand to share her experiences securing investment for the up-and-coming home insurer.

“A gender-balanced business is a better business in every way, but we can’t hire more women if there are no women pursuing careers in the sector,” said the CEO. “That’s why we’re getting behind initiatives such as Geek Girls. By attending these events we are actively working towards making a difference and learning from them to evoke change.
“We want to see men and women from other insurtech businesses supporting and learning from these initiatives in the way we are. Disappointingly, buzzvault was the only business there with a balance of male and female representation.”
Internally, the insurtech said it is changing the recruitment setup in a way that its job descriptions would appeal to the widest possible audiences.
“There’s been a lot of talk about gender diversity but actions speak louder than words, so we are participating in important events to help drive change and holding ourselves accountable,” added head of brand Tommy Rae Jnr.
