Research conducted by Aviva has revealed that 99% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK recognise the importance of employee wellbeing. Among the surveyed businesses, 77% view it as “very important,” while 22% see it as “somewhat important.”

The study, involving 500 senior professionals from UK SMEs, found that 92% of SMEs would be willing to pay higher insurance premiums to access wellbeing services for their employees. This highlights a growing acknowledgment of the role workplace health plays in supporting productivity and employee satisfaction.

Wellbeing initiatives gaining momentum

Aviva noted that many SMEs have implemented measures to address employee wellbeing. Nearly half (47%) provide mental health counselling, while 41% offer access to helplines, and 37% support employees with discounted wellbeing services such as gym memberships. Additionally, 44% conduct regular training for leaders on managing workplace mental health and employee wellbeing.

The study identified tangible benefits for businesses that invest in such initiatives. Respondents reported improved employee satisfaction (47%), increased productivity (40%), and higher retention rates (39%).

Commitment to employee wellbeing

The research highlighted the financial commitment many businesses are prepared to make for wellbeing services. About 29% of respondents indicated they would pay 11% to 15% more in insurance premiums annually, while 54% would pay an additional 6% to 10%.

“The wellbeing of employees is crucial to the success of any business, and it’s positive to see that so many SMEs understand that, too,” said Luke Powis, head of crisis management at Aviva.

Powis also noted that Aviva has recently added a range of services and services to its group personal accident or business travel products to support businesses in their goals to provide enhanced work environments. Among the additional services include mental health training for managers, 24/7 counselling services, and access to resources.
