Ancillary insurance provider Arc Legal Group has announced a new partnership with HB Underwriting targeting policyholders who employ carers due to their personal care requirements.

While traditional home insurance covers the informal employment of domestic workers such as cleaners and gardeners, it often does not provide adequate protection for those employing carers or personal assistants under arrangements funded by the NHS or local authorities.

These individuals, classified as employers under the Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, require commercial insurance to meet legal obligations.

In response, HB Underwriting has developed a niche insurance offering to close this coverage gap. The product combines Arc Legal’s Employment Defence cover, available as an optional add-on, with HB Underwriting’s core Employer’s Liability policy.

Arc Legal explained that this provides policyholders with protection against claims brought by employed carers in an employment tribunal, including coverage for any compensation awarded. Policyholders also gain access to Arc Legal’s 24/7 Legal Assistance Helpline and employment guide for support with employment-related matters.

Martin Johnson (pictured above), head of partnerships at Arc Legal, stated that the company was pleased to partner up, citing the link between HB Underwriting’s niche underwriting expertise and Arc Legal’s focus on bespoke insurance products.

“This deal compliments our increasing market share in commercial legal expenses insurance, across both SME and niche businesses,” Johnson said.

Kyle Lomas, managing director at HB Underwriting, said the partnership enhances their customer offering by providing online access to Arc Legal’s templates, documents, and Legal Assistance Helpline.

“This will offer expert support to our customers in meeting their legal obligations as an employer and offering legal defence should something go wrong,” Lomas said.
