In partnership with education charity Action Tutoring, QBE employees are seeking more volunteers to work with them in the insurer’s initiative to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds to improve their future prospects through tutoring.
In a news release, QBE Foundation volunteers invited industry colleagues to join them and commit at least one hour a week to help pupils with maths or English. Sessions could take place in schools or online. By joining, they receive training from Action Tutoring and lesson plans from them during their volunteer work.
In July this year, QBE Foundation announced it had signed a partnership agreement with Action Tutoring, pledging £1.5 million to help fill in the academic attainment gap in the UK. The foundation has since signed up over 40 volunteer tutors to work with the charity in tutoring primary and secondary school pupils for an hour every week over 10 weeks. Most lessons were conducted online.
“It’s great to be able to support the work that Action Tutoring do by providing both funds and volunteers. I know from volunteering myself on this programme, how easy it is to do and how much the children look forward to it every week,” said Grant Clemence, chair of QBE Foundation. “I’d encourage individuals and corporations to join us in helping Action Tutoring to reach more and more pupils.”
Action Tutoring provides volunteer tutors training to support of pupils who are at risk of not reaching national standards due to their disadvantaged backgrounds. Using lesson plans provided by Action Tutoring, volunteer tutors help up to three pupils in a class in maths or English. The charity noted this would help children in achieve stronger SATs and GCSE results and improve their employment prospects, and so expand their life choices.
“Action Tutoring are delighted that QBE has recognised so powerfully the critical importance of supporting children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to reach their potential,” said Susannah Hardyman, CEO of Action Tutoring. “Through both their funding and volunteering efforts, we will be able to ensure that many more young people are given the opportunity to benefit from the significant impact that tutoring delivers, making a tangible difference to young lives as well as wider society.”
With the partnership, QBE Foundation committed to a minimum of three years funding with an annual contribution of £500,000. It also expects the partnership and funding to extend for a further five years and beyond, the news release said.
