The London market has set a new Guinness World Record for the most participants in a static cycle relay and has raised £62,000 for Cancer Research.

Titled the “EC3 Relay”, the cancer-awareness event was organised by Aventum and held in Leadenhall Market. It was a major feat since the attempt to bag the new world record for the ‘most participants in a static cycle relay’ ran across three days and two nights. The event began at 10am on Tuesday, July 9, and ran throughout the night until 4pm on Thursday, July 11.

The 560 participants cycled at least one kilometre each in scheduled slots on a static bike, covering a total of 1,237km. Aventum, through the event, hit its target of raising £50,000 to fight the “big C” (cancer) by discovering effective treatment through research.

Aventum chief marketing officer Matt Field could not contain his happiness as the event created a new world record while raising money for a noble cause.

“We did it!” he said. “We are now officially holders of a new Guinness World Record. What a fantastic achievement and testament to the collective power of the people in EC3. We put out a call to action and boy did the market respond! We had a flood of people wanting to play a part, from cyclists to volunteers – we had an army of people who generously offered their time and money to help achieve this dream. Thank you everyone. I’m so touched at the response and incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved.”

“We did this challenge because we believe in the power of collective action to drive meaningful change. Cancer affects us all at some point in our lives. Every pound raised brings us closer to groundbreaking treatments, innovative therapies, and ultimately, a cure,” he added.

F1 racer Ollie Bearman, son of Aventum owner and CEO David Bearman, also participated in the event, where he multitasked in turning on the bike, meeting his fans, and encouraging other participants.

“This was such an inspiring and worthy cause and I’m honoured to have been involved,” he said. “The atmosphere was electric – such a heartwarming sight to witness those across the city putting aside commercial competition for the greater good and having a great time doing it too.”
