Sompo International has appointed Stephen Barr (pictured above) as the new head of marine & energy liability insurance, London Market.
Prior to joining Sompo International, Barr served as the European head of marine insurance at CNA/Hardy. His background spans roles as an underwriter and broker at renowned firms including Talbot, Hiscox, and Sedgwick. He is also vice chair of the International Union of Marine Insurance’s executive committee, having assumed the role in 2022.
Barr will be based in the company’s London office. He will report directly to Paul Ashworth, who serves as head of aviation, energy, and marine in the London Market.
Commenting on the appointment, Ashworth highlighted Barr’s experience and how he will contribute to Sompo International’s “well established” marine and energy insurance capability within the London specialty market.
“With the continued expansion of our UK business, in support of the company’s overall growth strategy, Stephen’s depth of experience and insight will be an asset as we engage in new opportunities and further develop bespoke solutions for our broker partners’ and clients’ evolving needs,” Ashworth said in a news release.
In October, Sompo International announced two senior middle market appointments. Jon Pope was named middle market insurance head for the London region, while Toby Harris joined as technology head for middle market insurance.
