Property & casualty (re)insurance provider Sompo International has announced the appointment of René Huber (pictured) as head of marine & specialty insurance for Continental Europe.
Huber brings over 25 years of experience in multinational business, with a strong focus on specialty and marine products. Prior to joining Sompo, he was senior manager for AXA XL’s global programs business.
In his new position, Huber will be responsible for formulating and executing Sompo International’s specialty/marine underwriting and distribution strategy. This would entail driving sustainable growth in the company’s book of business and establishing a robust team to support these efforts.
Huber will be based in Zurich, Switzerland, and will report to Ralph Brand, president of Continental Europe insurance.
“The European specialty market is forecast to grow substantially every year for the next decade,” Brand said in a release. “René’s reputation, extensive experience, and industry knowledge will be pivotal for Sompo International as we continue to develop our presence in this exciting and constantly evolving area.”
Huber’s appointment comes after Sompo International announced that Risa Ryan is assuming the newly created role of chief underwriting officer. Ryan took on the role in May after nearly three years at Swiss Re as global head of standard insurance products.
