Agile Insurance Group has announced that David Hughes has been appointed head of marine and deputy active underwriter of Lloyd’s Syndicate – Agile Underwriting Services Syndicate AUS2427.

Hughes has more than 25 years of experience in the marine market in London, Singapore and Hong Kong. He joins the company from AXA XL, where he served as head of marine hull and war for the UK and Lloyd’s. He also recently served on the joint hull committee.

Hughes will be based in London where he will operate with a global mandate and a $10 million linesize, the company said.

Agile chief executive Robin Barham said Hughes is “a natural fit” for the company. “David’s presence in London will enable him to represent Agile across all classes as he looks to build our marine offering,” he said.

Commenting on his appointment, Hughes said he was excited to join Agile and develop its marine offering.

Mark Hunt, the syndicate’s active underwriter, also expressed confidence in Hughes, saying that his addition to the team will be “another significant step forward” for the company.

“David’s knowledge and professionalism is highly regarded in the London Market, and his appointment continues our philosophy of attracting the very best people to represent us and become market leaders in each class,” he added.

The appointment follows the launch of Agile’s Australian property team as it continues to expand to support its Syndicate business plans.

Through AUS2427, which received an in-principle approval by Lloyd’s in March, Agile plans to focus on sectors including liability, professional indemnity and travel insurance.

“Our desire is to become a multi-region, top quartile partner to our clients and distribution channels, driven by servicing, innovation and claims excellence,” Hughes said.

Agile is an insurtech insurance group originally established as a Lloyd’s coverholder in 2015. Its Agile platform provides brokers with access to quote-to-close functionality for simpler risks, allowing the underwriter and broker more time to craft personalised solutions for complex client needs.

The company launched its underwriting syndicate at Lloyd’s in May, following the approval of its Australian MGA as a syndicate service company and the establishment of more operations in New Zealand.
