Carbon Underwriting Limited, an independent managing general underwriter and Lloyd’s syndicate, has announced its entry into the international healthcare sector.

The company has appointed Martin Leeks (pictured) as head of international medical malpractice to lead the new division.

Leeks brings over 35 years of underwriting experience in international casualty and medical malpractice, most recently at Everest Group. He has a history of building and managing profitable portfolios, which will support Carbon's plans for growth in the international healthcare market.

The new division will initially focus on delegated portfolios in Australia, Canada, the UK and Europe, underwriting on Lloyd’s paper. This follows the recent appointment of Alex Poracchia as Carbon’s chief financial officer.

Nick Tye, founder and chief executive officer of Carbon, described Leeks’ appointment as a key step in the company’s expansion.

“Martin’s appointment is a fantastic step forward for Carbon as we launch our international healthcare division. This is more than just a strategic expansion – it’s a statement of our intent to bring fresh energy, innovation, and insight to the healthcare market,” Tye said.

Leeks expressed enthusiasm for the new role, highlighting Carbon’s approach to innovation and data-driven insights.

“The international healthcare market is ripe with opportunity, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to join the fast-growing Carbon team. This is a company with a great reputation, that doesn’t just talk about innovation, it lives and breathes it,” he said.

The move signals Carbon’s broader ambitions to establish a strong presence in international markets.

Last year, Dale Willetts and Rob Crocker joined the company as head of specialty and active underwriter, respectively. Willetts’ credentials include time spent at Sompo International, Travelers and QBE. Meanwhile, Crocker joined the company from Everest Re, where he was also an active underwriter and professional lines head.
