Altea Insurance (Altea), a multi-class, multi-year managing general agent (MGA) specialising in the healthcare and medical sectors, has announced its expansion to offer business across the European Economic Area (EEA).

The company, based in Ireland, will deliver bespoke insurance and risk management solutions to healthcare professionals and organisations throughout the region.

Central to Altea’s offering is its risk management platform, AlteaPlus, which provides proactive risk management, claim prevention support, and medico-legal expertise tailored to specific markets. The platform is designed to enhance Altea’s integrated insurance and risk management solutions, helping healthcare providers mitigate risks before they occur.

The company said that it aims to raise the standard of healthcare risk management in Ireland and beyond with these services.

Carly Matson, CEO of Altea, said the growing complexity of the healthcare risk landscape has driven demand for integrated insurance and risk mitigation services across Europe.

“Altea integrates medical and legal expertise, offering a distinctive tiered risk management product suite to pre-emptively address exposures with a unified approach, avoiding siloed solutions. This marks a significant shift, allowing insureds to mitigate risks proactively,” Matson said.

Altea’s expansion includes markets in France, Italy, Malta, Poland, and Spain, with the company also exploring opportunities in the Nordics. The move leverages local partnerships and associations to strengthen Altea’s presence in both established and emerging medical malpractice markets across Europe.

Matson added that Altea is focused on building strong partnerships with clients, simplifying the insurance procurement process by offering a single point of contact.

“Our team has invested time in building relationships in Ireland alongside our existing connections, meeting with brokers and consulting experts in the field, ensuring we provide tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of the Irish market, which we will also be replicating across Europe, introducing the Altea concept,” Matson said.

Altea is supported by Mission Underwriters UK & Europe and backed by long-term capacity from Accelerant. This support positions the MGA to meet the growing demand for integrated healthcare insurance and risk management solutions across the region.

Elsewhere in Ireland's insurance sector, Aviva Insurance Ireland has announced the expansion of its insurance offerings for the hospitality industry, in line with the country’s Action Plan for Insurance Reform. The insurer will focus on providing coverage for restaurants, pubs, and select hotels, aiming to boost competition within the insurance market for these businesses.

This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to address the needs of the hospitality sector, which has faced challenges in securing affordable and comprehensive insurance coverage in recent years.
