We’ve heard this time and again, that terrorism no longer has the same face we were shown years ago, and it looks like the assertion isn’t falling on deaf ears.

Recognising the importance of providing “the most up-to-date reliable information possible,” global risk modelling and analytics firm RMS has rolled out the latest iterations of its terrorism models. Version 4.2 of the RMS Probabilistic Terrorism Model (PTM) has been released, while the update in RiskLink Version 18 of the RMS Terrorism Scenario Model (TSM) is now available.

New benefits to terrorism model licensees include a refined terrorism target database for the UK, Belgium, and the US; updated conditional probability of various attack types based on data in the US, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, and the UK; and the addition of the greater Brussels area to PTM.

Aside from adding targets such as new high-profile properties, previous targets that now do not meet the selection criteria have been removed. The latitude and longitude coordinates of key attack points have been finetuned as well.

Meanwhile the RMS terrorism models also highlight soft targets, or the likes of transportation hubs and after-hours venues, amid a rise in lone-wolf attacks in such locations.

“The global terrorism landscape is continually evolving,” commented RMS catastrophist Gordon Woo. “Numerous factors contribute to an increased or reduced risk outlook, both in terms of terrorist threat and the preparedness of governments and counter-terrorism initiatives.”

In the US, for instance, all Trump Organization hotels in New York City and Washington DC have been added to the target database following the increased threat of attack to these establishments since Donald Trump became president last year.
