Last Friday’s terror attack at Parsons Green station led to the separate arrests of two men – both facing further detention until September 21 and 23 amid ongoing questioning.

The Metropolitan Police reported that the two – aged 18 and 21 – remain in custody at a south London police station. Both were not named by the police, but several media reports identified them as refugee youth fostered by the same elderly couple.

The men were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act following an explosion involving a home-made bomb – which fortunately did not fully detonate – at the London Tube.

“There is still much more to do but this greater clarity and this progress has led JTAC – the independent body that assesses threat – to come to the judgement that an attack is no longer imminent,” said assistant commissioner Mark Rowley, National Lead for Counter Terrorism Policing.

The threat level has been reduced from critical to severe. The incident, which injured 30 people, is the latest in a string of terror attacks in the UK this year.

This week Home Secretary Amber Rudd announced that an additional £24 million will be pumped into counter-terrorism policing.
