Claims management giant Sedgwick has achieved carbon-neutral status for its UK operations.

The company’s environmental management system was awarded ISO 14001 certification, as verified by the British Standards Institution. Its carbon neutrality, meanwhile, was confirmed based on international standard Publicly Available Specification 2060.

In the past year, Sedgwick successfully reduced its carbon footprint in the UK by 26% through a robust ESG (environmental, social, and governance) strategy that includes minimising travel via remote working, significant investments in renewable energy, motion-activated lighting, and an increasing percentage (70%) of electric/hybrid vehicles in Sedgwick’s fleet.

Separately, Sedgwick’s UK repair solutions restoration network had previously obtained ISO 14001 certification in 2014 and achieved carbon neutrality in 2022.

Sedgwick UK chief executive Neil Gibson (pictured) commented: “Becoming carbon-neutral across our UK business is a landmark achievement. It’s also an important step towards meeting our Science Based Targets of becoming carbon net zero by the end of this decade.

“Climate-related catastrophes are a huge threat to the industry and the world around us. If we hope to reduce the impact of global warming on our environment, the transition to a low-carbon economy is more crucial than ever.”

To further support sustainability, Sedgwick has implemented various initiatives to assist clients in reducing their Scope 3 emissions. The initiatives feature a high-performing carbon value calculator that accurately assesses and promotes carbon-neutral repair options, supporting the recycling of components from large commercial steel-framed buildings to achieve up to 80% carbon reductions.

Additionally, Sedgwick’s proactive carbon-saving programme restored contents in over 5,500 property damage cases in 2023, saving insurer clients an estimated £4.1 million.

Globally, Sedgwick is manned by 33,000 people in 80 countries, specialising in mitigating and reducing risks and losses, promoting health and productivity, protecting brand reputations, and containing costs that can impact performance.
