JLT Specialty London (JLT) has appointed Emilie Walsh as head of environmental as part of JLT’s specialty property & casualty team.

The key hire will be working closely with clients to advise them on any existing exposures, as well as emerging environmental risks. According to JLT, demand for environmental risk and insurance solutions has steadily grown over the years following the introduction of new regulations which imposed additional liabilities on businesses for environmental damage.

Walsh – who holds a BSc in Chemistry and Management from the University of Nottingham, as well as an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London – held a number of positions involving environmental consultancy and underwriting before joining JLT, including leading the UK environmental underwriting team at AIG.

JLT’s new environmental head has been involved in a broad range of complex and major risks such as operational, transactional, and project risks covering a range of industries like construction, real-estate, energy, and manufacturing.

“It has become an increasingly important insurance for a wide range of commercial businesses including waste management and oil companies, commercial landlords, land developers, manufacturers, and utilities companies,” said JLT.

Simon Delchar, chief executive of JLT’s specialty property & casualty team, commented that there is growing concern among businesses about their environmental exposures and that many are increasingly looking for specialist advice and guidance.

He added: “Emilie’s experience in this sector will be of huge benefit to both existing and potential clients who could be affected by the issue, and her wealth of knowledge will help them make the right decisions for their business going forward.”
