UK managing general agent Pen Underwriting has promoted Ian Summerfield (pictured) to head of cyber effective in the New Year. Currently, Summerfield serves as commercial director for hazardous goods & environmental industries within the MGA’s specialty division.
“Ian’s impressive leadership and business development credentials, track record in successful portfolio performance, and real passion for motivating teams to win through collaboration and customer excellence make him the ideal successor as leader of our dedicated cyber practice,” international managing director Adrian Scott said in a release.
“Cyber represents a huge growth opportunity for Pen’s international division, with clients spread across key territories around the world, and Ian’s appointment is another great example of our ability to match the ambition of our business with the ambition of our talent. He will be taking up the reins of a fantastic team and cyber portfolio in great shape, primed for further expansion.”
Succeeding Hamir Patel after a comprehensive handover period, Summerfield brings more than 15 years of industry experience to the role. The RSA alumnus, who came on board Pen in April 2020, will take on the strategic and operational leadership of the dedicated unit.
“Cyber continues to be one of the insurance industry’s fastest growing and most rapidly evolving areas of risk and exposure,” Summerfield, an underwriter by profession, noted. “That brings equal amounts of opportunity and challenge for an underwriting business focussed on portfolio performance. And it’s a challenge I’m excited to take on.
“Brokers look to Pen’s cyber practice for access to both technical underwriting expertise and fast, flexible digitally enabled solutions. And colleagues look to it, too, as an invaluable source of complementary cover for their clients – cover that is able to close a protection gap which rising digital exposures seek to widen.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to working with our team of cyber specialists to continue delivering brilliantly on both fronts.”
