Effective allyship in the workplace is not just a moral imperative but a strategic necessity that significantly boosts organisational performance and drives cultural change.

Allyship can become the catalyst for fostering a more inclusive corporate culture, creating an environment that maximises talent, breaks down barriers to advancement, and cultivates workplaces that thrive on embracing difference by promoting fairness.

Delivering cultural transformation necessitates industry-wide collaboration, benefiting all sector employees, particularly women who frequently encounter underrepresentation in senior roles and often face obstacles, such as limited access to leadership opportunities and systemic biases.

Cross-industry initiative to drive forward cultural change

As managing director of the ISC Group, I’ve seen firsthand the work of this leading women’s network group in RE/insurance, including most recently how it has spearheaded an innovative approach across industries by launching a Male Ally Committee – led by ISC board member, Nick Dunlop as chair.

This initiative focuses on actively involving men in the pursuit of gender equity. By harnessing the collective influence and insights of male allies, ISC Group aims to advocate for an industry-wide cultural change. This group is tasked with breaking down barriers preventing women from reaching top seniority levels and bringing an understanding of the impact and benefits of gender fairness and balance. Through this progressive strategy, ISC Group is not only promoting gender parity but also driving better business outcomes fostering a more inclusive industry environment.

The role of ISC Group’s new male ally committee

Discussing the committee and the role it has to play, Dunlop shared that: "Our goal, at ISC Group is to foster a culture of inclusivity and equity within the re/insurance industry. By establishing a committee of influential male allies, we aim to pave the way for systemic change, ensuring that women at every level can access opportunity and advancement throughout their careers. We envision a future where gender parity is not just a goal but a reality, driving better business results and creating a more vibrant and diverse industry."

The introduction of ISC Group’s innovative male ally committee hopes to serve as the catalyst for sustainable culture change and broader representation. Male allies play a crucial role in closing the inequality gap, advocating for changes that enable women to fulfil their full potential. Encouraging inclusive decision-making and collaborative approaches with other men and women helps cultivate a dynamic environment where innovation thrives.

This not only enhances the organisation's adaptability and competitiveness but also strengthens its ability to meet the evolving needs of its stakeholders and achieve sustainable growth.

The establishment of this male ally committee represents a broader aspiration for a more equitable future in RE/insurance. It is envisioned that through concerted efforts and collaborative initiatives, the industry will evolve towards greater gender and pay parity and inclusivity. By actively involving men in advancing these goals, ISC Group aims to set a precedent for cultural transformation.

This inclusive approach not only enhances organisational dynamics but also strengthens business outcomes through diverse leadership and innovative thinking. Ultimately, the hope is to create an environment where talent is maximised, barriers are dismantled, and women are recognised and supported at every level of their careers, contributing to a more vibrant and balanced RE/insurance sector.
