Claims management specialist Sedgwick has announced Alex Nicoll (pictured) as the new head of its media and entertainment claims division in the UK.

Nicoll brings an expansive background as a former Hollywood producer/director and trained barrister, with substantial experience on TV and film sets.

His career has also spanned roles as a media insurance broker and in claims management, notably overseeing injury claims involving A-list celebrities and complex claims related to delays in major TV and film productions.

His expertise and industry knowledge previously earned him a position with the UK Government's Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, where he played a key role in managing the post-pandemic Film and TV Production Restart Scheme.

Alongside another colleague from Sedgwick, Nicoll was also part of a five-member panel that managed the £500 million COVID-19 interruption scheme.

As part of this new role, Nicoll leads a skilled team of five claims handlers, each with specialized knowledge in different facets of the media world, ranging from film and TV production to sports, e-sports, motorsport, production accounting, festivals, live events, advertising, and theatre.

“The media and entertainment industry has undergone significant changes recently and continues to evolve rapidly,” Nicoll said. “With the advent of new technologies and emerging risks, it's imperative that we stay proactive and adjust to meet the evolving needs of our clients.”

“The unique nature of the media and entertainment sectors makes understanding the key business motivators and challenges essential in risk management and insurance claims,” he said. “By speaking the industry's language and anticipating potential issues, we can mitigate difficulties more effectively.”

Joseph Noel, managing director of commercial claims services at Sedgwick, highlighted the company's capabilities that will be further bolstered by Nicoll’s appointment.

“With access to Sedgwick's global expertise across various specialisms, including environmental, cyber, liability, and marine, coupled with a comprehensive in-house legal team, we are well-equipped to respond promptly to challenges anywhere in the world. Alex's unique background and extensive experience provide us with a significant advantage in the unpredictable media and entertainment market,” he said.
