In a bid to boost awareness of career opportunities in claims, the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) and the International Underwriting Association (IUA) have introduced two online job simulations.
The simulations aim to provide students with a practical, immersive experience, showcasing the varied roles within the claims sector. The initiative stems from the 2023 LMA Claims Strategy and was motivated by findings from the LMA’s recent Heads of Claims Talent Survey, which highlighted the need to strengthen the early talent pipeline in claims.
Developed in collaboration with Forage, an educational platform with over six million participants worldwide, the simulations allow students to gain first-hand experience in claims handling. Forage partners with universities and nonprofits to deliver these simulations, enabling students to enhance their skills and explore career options in a real-world context.
The initiative also ties into the London Market Group’s (LMG) London Insurance Life platform, which offers further career resources and job listings within the specialty insurance sector.
Janine Powell (pictured right), claims director at the LMA, noted: “Over the past 18 months, we have identified that challenges experienced by the claims community are, in part, related to early talent attraction. We recognise that there is an urgent need to address this through collective action across the London market.
“The job simulations will raise the visibility of a career in claims and the skills required to build a claims career, illustrating the variety and societal value claims roles deliver.”
Powell also mentioned that the simulations are just one element of a broader market-wide initiative. Efforts are also being made to improve the accessibility of job advertisements for claims roles and to enhance networking and educational opportunities for early-career professionals.
Joe Shaw (pictured left), senior underwriting and claims executive at the IUA, added: “The London insurance market offers many exciting career opportunities across a wide range of claims-related functions. From problem-solving complex cases to helping individuals and businesses recover from unforeseen events, claims practitioners play a vital role.
“Companies are keen to showcase the rewarding and dynamic roles available in our industry and recruit the next generation of claims professionals.”
Meanwhile Forage co-founder and general manager Tom Brunskill pointed to the clear gap in the market for such an educational programme.
“It is our hope that through this partnership, we can match up motivated people with a fulfilling career in claims,” he said.
