Adam Humphrey (pictured above), CEO of CCS & GRS International at Global Risk Solutions, has been elected president of the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA) following the Institute’s annual general meeting (AGM).

He succeeds Steven Wallace of McLarens, who steps down after completing his one-year term. Humphrey will be supported by Hugh Kennaway, executive director and global head of downstream adjusting at Matthews Daniel, who has been elected deputy president.

The CILA explained that Humphrey’s presidency will focus on expanding CILA’s international presence and reinforcing its relevance to a broad spectrum of technical claims professionals. At the AGM, he highlighted the evolving nature of claims, which now require a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach.

He also emphasised the importance of cooperation between various experts, including quantity surveyors, engineers, damage management specialists, forensic accountants, insurers, brokers, and loss adjusters.

Continuing the work initiated by his predecessor, Humphrey plans to advance CILA’s long-term strategy outlined in its first-ever Manifesto. The strategy, which spans three to five years, aims to future-proof the profession, navigate the complexities of the evolving risk landscape, and uphold trust in the claims process.

The manifesto focuses on professional excellence, technological adaptation, and thought leadership, with a particular emphasis on inclusivity, diversity, and global collaboration.

CILA has also made strides in expanding its footprint in Africa and the Middle East over the past year, exemplified by local events and a partnership with the Institute of Loss Adjusters of Southern Africa (ILASA).

Humphrey, who has over 20 years of experience managing complex insurance claims worldwide, has held senior roles at international adjusting firms, specialising in energy, project, and construction risks. A long-standing member of CILA, he has chaired its Construction, Energy, and Engineering Special Interest Group. Humphrey holds a law degree and an MBA from Henley Business School.

Commenting on his election, Humphrey said it was an honour to take on the role of CILA President and that he would continue building on the initiatives set in place by his predecessor.

“The claims landscape is increasingly complex, requiring the involvement of various disciplines working together to resolve claims efficiently and professionally,” Humphrey said. “CILA is as relevant to an in-house claims professional, forensic accountant or technical engineer as it is to a ‘traditional’ property or casualty loss adjuster. Having started my own career in law before entering loss adjusting, I’ve seen the importance of CILA’s qualifications and professional development to different experts within the claims arena.”

Kennaway, the newly appointed deputy president, is known for his work in the downstream energy and petrochemicals sector, handling multi-million-dollar claims.

CILA’s AGM covered key industry topics, including COVID-19 business interruption claims, legal developments concerning construction defect wordings, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), and the evolving regulatory landscape. The event also placed a strong emphasis on emerging talent in the industry.

John Bissell, executive director of CILA, said that Adam Humphrey is a respected figure in the loss adjusting profession and a long-time advocate for CILA. Bissell noted that CILA sees potential for international growth, particularly in Africa and the Middle East, where regulatory frameworks align with CILA’s Chartered qualifications.

“We provide a forum for professionals to share knowledge and address emerging challenges, including regulatory changes, geopolitical issues, and advances in technology, ensuring our members are equipped to meet the demands of the modern claims environment,” Bissell said.
