Across the UK, there are currently 31 flood warnings (flooding is expected) and 55 flood alerts (flooding is possible) in place. Amid the threat, insurer Aviva is urging homeowners to take proactive steps to safeguard their properties.
“Although the worst of the weather looks to have passed over, water levels in many places are high, and there is a risk of localised flooding,” stated Aviva home claims head Laura Lazarus. “If it is safe to do so, we would urge customers to take some simple steps to protect their homes before conditions deteriorate.”
Measures that can be taken include clearing gutters and drains to minimise the risk of overflow, moving valuable items to upper floors or higher shelves, preparing a flood emergency kit, reviewing home insurance coverage and storing documents safely, and keeping windows and doors sealed.
For homeowners who have already experienced flooding, Aviva’s response teams are on-site in affected areas, assisting with claims and beginning restoration efforts.
Lazarus noted: “Sadly, for some customers, flooding has already occurred, and our priority during these events is to help those affected. Our claims teams are already on the ground in many affected locations, helping customers with their claims and appointing restorers to begin the drying out and repair process.”
While most of the reported claims so far have been for relatively minor issues, Aviva stressed the importance of contacting the insurer promptly.
“Even a small amount of water can cause substantial damage to homes or businesses, so we’d urge anyone that’s been affected to get in touch with us so we can support them during their claim and begin the drying out process as quickly as possible,” Lazarus said.
Meanwhile Aviva customers can file claims online via the company’s website or through the MyAviva app.
