“Widnes Vikings can confirm that Sunday’s fixture against Sheffield Eagles has been officially postponed.”
This was the statement released by the cash-strapped club two days after updating members, supporters, and partners on its current financial situation. The side, once known as the ‘Cup Kings’ in the 1980s and World Club champions in 1989, said “it was felt appropriate” not to push through with the Betfred Championship match against Sheffield Eagles as it strives to stave off its demise.
Meanwhile a Love Rugby League report pointed to player insurance issues as a key reason behind the postponement.
Earlier this week Widnes Vikings issued a release saying it has been facing a significant gap in its cashflow. This indicated the club’s inability to make its payroll commitments for all employees.
“Throughout the past three months, Widnes Vikings’ board of directors and senior staff members have made extensive efforts to engage business leaders and individuals to secure investment to stabilise the club and overcome the potential threat of administration,” it stated on its website, adding that the club will continue to pursue all available avenues to raise funds.
As for this weekend’s postponed game, it was noted that the move was done in conjunction with the Sheffield side.
“Widnes Vikings are grateful for the support of Sheffield on this matter,” said the club.
