‘Better have it and not need it than need it and not have it’ goes the famous saying. This is perhaps what went on in the minds of Thetford councillors when it was decided the town council is taking out terrorism insurance.
The insurance provider was not identified but, according to Eastern Daily Press, the quote was in excess of £1,500. The planned purchase gained support at this week’s full council meeting.
“As a town we have some large events and if we had a terror incident the government would not give any money to help with repairs,” the report, which noted that the council has £12 million in assets, quoted town clerk Tina Cunnell as saying.
“The financial committee agreed that they believed it would be good. It was a majority vote to take on the additional insurance.”
Meanwhile assurances that the policy take-up won’t be at the expense of other services, have been offered.
“The council money isn’t taken from one pot to pay for the insurance,” stated Cunnell. “It isn't money that we would have been able to use to pay for a playground. All the council finances are allocated to how we can spend it.”
