Senior underwriter Peter Laidlaw (pictured) will be the new active underwriter at Atrium Underwriters Limited come 2023.
The managing agent for Lloyd’s Syndicate 609, Atrium is restructuring its management, subject to regulatory approvals. Proposed changes include current active underwriter Toby Drysdale becoming corporate underwriting review director, which is an advisory role.
“It has been a privilege to have been the active underwriter of Syndicate 609 for the last seven years,” stated Drysdale. “After much consideration, I have decided to step down for personal reasons. Atrium is a very special company, and I am delighted that its approach to flexible working will allow me to continue to contribute to its success while achieving a better work/life balance.”
Drsydale’s successor, meanwhile, sees the appointment as an honour.
“Having spent my entire career at Atrium,” said Laidlaw, “I am honoured to take on the leadership of such an exceptional team of underwriters. It has been a privilege to work closely with Toby over the years, and I am delighted that I will continue to have access to his wisdom and to have his ongoing support. I am excited about both Atrium’s future and the opportunities that lie ahead.”
As for Atrium chief executive Richard Harries, he is happy with the upcoming transition.
Harries commented: “I am delighted that Peter has accepted the role of active underwriter of Atrium Syndicate 609. This move comes as part of our long-term succession plan – and with over 29 years at Atrium, Peter has long been the standout candidate to take over from Toby.
“Toby has been an exceptional active underwriter, and we at Atrium – our names and shareholders – owe him a huge debt of gratitude. I’m pleased that Toby has agreed to stay on and support the business, and we’re very fortunate he has agreed to do so.”
The appointment is set to take effect on January 01 next year.
