Bermuda-based specialty insurer Sompo International Holdings (SIH) has appointed John (Jack) Kuhn as chief underwriting officer for its property & casualty business, in addition to his current role as CEO for global insurance.
In his new role, Kuhn will provide leadership across the company’s insurance and reinsurance underwriting operations as Sompo International continues to build the overseas platform of its Japan-based parent company, Sompo Holdings Inc. Stephen Young, CEO of global reinsurance, will report to Kuhn and will continue as a member of Sompo International’s P&C executive team.
Kuhn joined Endurance Specialty Holdings, the predecessor of Sompo International Holdings, in November 2012 from AXIS Capital, where he was most recently chief underwriting officer. With 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry, Kuhn has held senior management and underwriting roles at Kemper Insurance and the Chubb Group. He is a former member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society Board of Trustees and holds a BA degree from Wesleyan University.
“I am very excited at the opportunity to take on broader responsibilities across both our insurance and reinsurance segments as we build Sompo International into a truly global integrated platform,” Kuhn commented on his appointment. “We have very strong management teams across both segments and I look forward to working with them as we further enhance our underwriting capabilities.”
Meanwhile, John Charman, CEO of Sompo International, added: “With a demonstrated track record of transforming our insurance business, I have every confidence that Jack will successfully guide us to considerable future growth across both our insurance and reinsurance platforms.”
