QIC Global appoints Michael van der Straaten as CEO

It was today announced that Michael van der Straaten (pictured) has been appointed as CEO of QIC Global (International), the international specialty insurance and reinsurance subsidiary of Qatar Insurance Group, effective of March 01, 2020. 

CEO of Antares, QIC Global’s Lloyd’s specialist insurance and reinsurance entity, Joe Battle, will report to van der Straaten while Sunil Talwar will remain as QIC Global chairman. van der Straaten has over 35 years of experience in the insurance industry and has been CEO of Qatar Re since January 2019, and will remain as CEO of Qatar Re. 

van der Straaten has held several senior roles throughout his long career at Canopius Group, Chubb and QIC Europe and he first joined Lloyd’s market in 1984, since specialising in property treaty and other specialty lines.

Speaking on his appointment, van de Straaten said: “Antares and Qatar Re are both fantastic underwriting platforms, with a diverse range of income streams, a wealth of talent and established reputations at Lloyd’s and internationally. With market conditions improving markedly, I look forward to working with Joe and Sunil to grow the business further.”

Meanwhile, Talwar commented: “Qatar Re and Antares are both poised for long-term growth, with an established operational platform in QIC Global and the firm financial backing of QIC Group. Mike has overseen the transformation of Qatar Re into a global multi-line reinsurer with a sustainable, profitable portfolio of business and we are very pleased he will be leading QIC Global into the next phase of its expansion.”
