The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has appointed Andy Briggs (pictured), CEO of Phoenix Group, as its new president. His term begins immediately and will run for two years.

Briggs succeeds Tim Bailey of Zurich, who held the role since 2023. Ken Norgrove, CEO of UK & International at RSA Insurance, will continue as deputy president.

New Association of British Insurers president

ABI chair Baroness Nicky Morgan highlighted the significance of Briggs’s appointment, citing his experience across the UK insurance and long-term savings sectors.

“We’re delighted Andy Briggs is stepping into the role of president. His extensive experience across the UK’s insurance and long-term savings sector is especially pertinent at this time as we work with the industry, government, and regulators to support the growth mission, alongside Ken Norgrove as our deputy president,” she said.

She also expressed appreciation for Bailey’s contributions during his time on the board and wished him success in his new position at Zurich.

Andy Briggs’s career

Briggs has spent more than three decades in the insurance sector and is a qualified actuary. His previous positions include serving as group CEO of Friends Life, managing director at Scottish Widows, and chief executive of Prudential’s retirement income division.

Before joining Phoenix Group, he was CEO of UK Insurance at Aviva. He has also been involved in charitable work, serving as a trustee for the NSPCC and chairing its Income Generation Committee. In recognition of his fundraising efforts, he was awarded an MBE in the 2021 New Year Honours.

Commenting on his appointment, Briggs stated that the ABI provides a unified voice for the industry at a time when insurers are focused on supporting economic growth, protecting customers, and ensuring strong investment outcomes.

“Through the ABI, the industry is stronger together, and I look forward to working even more closely with members and business leaders to achieve these goals,” he said.

New Association of British Insurers board members

The ABI has also appointed three new board members. Drazen Jaksic, Zurich UK CEO, takes over from Bailey following his transition to Zurich’s Global Life Protection business.

Admiral’s UK Insurance CEO, Alistair Hargreaves, replaces Cristina Nestares. Meanwhile, Chris Carroll, CEO of Bupa Insurance UK, succeeds Alex Perry.
