Markel International president William Stovin and his employees will hold a charity walk this afternoon to raise funds for injured and homeless members of the British Armed Forces.

Taking part in the annual Christmas campaign of the Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) charity, Stovin and a team of 35 colleagues will walk from the Markel headquarters in London to Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Among the Markel employees joining the event is senior underwriter Mike Wimbridge, whose father is a pensioner at Royal Hospital, a retirement and nursing home for veterans.

“We have been really impressed with the work that Walking With The Wounded does,” Stovin said. “Taking part in its Christmas walk is a way of showing our support for the charity, for the veterans it helps as well as helping with fundraising.”

Last year’s walks totalled more than 5,000 miles and raised enough funds to support more than 250 vulnerable veterans through the charity’s programmes.

“Many of our ex-military personnel face a Christmas and New Year without much sparkle. We are so grateful to the huge numbers of you who accept our challenge to stride out on their behalf before Christmas,” said WWTW fundraising director Andrew Cook.

“They will join thousands of people across the UK pulling on their walking boots and Santa hats to have an adventure on their doorsteps, be it one mile or 100,” he added. “Every walk helps raise crucial funds for homeless and vulnerable veterans with physical, mental or social injuries.”
