Markel Corporation subsidiary Markel International has announced the appointment of Paul Western (pictured) as a senior underwriter for hull and war.
In a statement, the firm said that Western will report to Dan McCarthy, head of hull and war at Markel International, and will add “significant experience to Markel’s market-leading hull and war team.”
Prior to his appointment, Western spent 27 years at MS Amlin, where he was the head of hull and war. He currently sits on both the joint hull committee and the joint war committee at Lloyd’s.
Speaking on Western’s appointment, McCarthy said that the firm is “delighted to welcome Paul to Markel.”
“With his vast knowledge and experience, he will play a crucial role in further enhancing our market standing and leadership position,” said McCarthy.
For his part, Western said that he was happy to be joining Markel, which has “a successful and longstanding history as a leader in hull and war.”
“In my role, I’m looking forward to growing our leadership position by supporting existing clients and developing new opportunities,” said Western.
The appointment follows Markel’s promotion of Katie Costello to senior underwriter and Josh Wakely to assistant underwriter in September this year. It also comes on the heels of the firm’s appointment of a trio of underwriters – Charlie Richardson, Sarah McCarthy, and Yong Ruay Heah – to its renewable energy team.
