Giancarlo D’Alessandro has been appointed as portfolio underwriting head at Hampden Risk Partners’ Syndicate 2689 at Lloyd’s (HRP). The key addition bolsters HRP’s underwriting and analytical strengths, aiding in the continued success of its ‘intelligent follow model’ reset.

In 2023, HRP partnered exclusively with high-performing Lloyd’s syndicates on a consortium and quota share reinsurance basis for select lines of business. This strategic approach has led to an 84.1% net combined ratio projection – better than the planned 94.5% metric.

D’Alessandro brings 13 years of experience in lead underwriting roles at AIG and QBE, where he recently managed a £150 million gross written premium portfolio covering general liability clients across large corporate, mid-market, and coverholder segments.

Active underwriter Chris Sharp had this to say about the key hire: “I am delighted that Giancarlo is joining us. He has gained impressive experience during his 13 years in the insurance industry that will be very beneficial as we continue to see the successes of the intelligent follow model. Moreover, he will bolster the underwriting department of Syndicate 2689.”

D’Alessandro, meanwhile, commented: “I am thrilled to be joining HRP and am looking forward to working with the team. Following the 2023 results, this is a fantastic time to join HRP and to contribute to the success.”

The portfolio underwriting head’s appointment comes on the heels of the chair succession at Hampden Holdings Limited, the ultimate holding company of Hampden Group. Appointed as successor to founder Tim Oliver is Lord Strathclyde, who is the current chair of subsidiary Hampden Agencies Limited.

“I am delighted to hand on the chairmanship of Hampden to Tom Strathclyde,” Oliver recently stated. “He has worked with the group for a number of years and his skills and insight will be important to Hampden’s continued long-term development.”
