Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM) has named Henry Nelson (pictured) as chief underwriting officer for its UK and MENA (Middle East and North Africa) operations, effective in the New Year.
The internal hire will begin transitioning into his duties over the next few weeks, working closely with outgoing CUO Mel O’Neill prior to the latter’s retirement at the end of 2024.
Nelson’s new responsibilities will include managing underwriting strategy across the UK and MENA markets, with a focus on driving profitable growth and fostering a culture of high performance. He will report to UK & MENA president Luis Prato and LSM CUO Ronald Bolaños.
An 11-year veteran at Liberty, Nelson brings a wealth of cross-functional expertise to the role, having held several positions within the company. Most recently, he has served as chief of staff since 2022, after previously leading portfolio management for London and global products.
Nelson’s broad experience includes working across multiple business lines, such as marine and war & terrorism. He joined Liberty in 2016 following his stint at Aon’s crisis management team.
Commenting on the appointment, Prato noted: “Henry’s in-depth understanding of our business strategy, combined with his cross-functional experience and strong relationships across the business, will be essential as we continue to grow and future-proof our operations in the UK & MENA region.
“His perspectives will strengthen our ability to deliver value for our clients, brokers, and our Liberty teams.”
Prato also acknowledged O’Neill’s contributions, citing her “exceptional service” over the past 21 years. “Her commitment to excellence and strong leadership have laid robust foundations upon which Henry will build,” he said.
Manned by more than 2,000 colleagues in around 50 offices, LSM offers specialty and commercial insurance and reinsurance products across key markets in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, the US, Bermuda, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.
