Legal & General has made two senior appointments to its retail protection team, with James Shattock (pictured left) named as new managing director for UK protection and Pippa Keefe (pictured right) chosen as new commercial director.
Shattock replaces outgoing managing director of UK protection Steve Griffiths, who announced his retirement after a 17-year career at Legal & General, while Keefe succeeds Shattock in his previous role as commercial director for retail protection.
Shattock will assume his new role in December, joining the retail executive leadership team and bringing with him over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry across both the direct and reinsurance markets. He joined Legal & General three years ago from UNUM UK, where he was chief underwriting officer.
Keefe, who was previously business development director at Legal & General Retail Protection, will join the retail protection leadership team, bringing with her over 13 years of experience in the protection market, working with insurers, re-insurers, and direct distributors. She has been with Legal & General since 2021.
“Both James and Pippa’s appointments demonstrate how we’re continuously looking to support growth and development within our team and tap into the immense existing talent,” stated Bernie Hickman, chief executive at Legal & General Retail. “It is a fast-moving time for the protection industry, and I’m looking forward to working with James and Pippa in their new roles to ensure that we continue to deliver as a market leader in protection.
“I also want to thank Steve for his fantastic service to Legal & General, which has seen record protection claim payouts, as well as product changes to improve customer outcomes for more people.”
Commenting on his appointment, Shattock said he hopes to use his experience in the insurance industry to help deliver Legal & General’s strategy across both its retail and group protection.
“I strongly believe in the value we bring to our customers and their families, and I’m really excited about the opportunity to continue the great work already undertaken by Steve,” Shattock added.
“The protection market is going through a lot of change, and this provides a great opportunity for us to broaden our customer support to keep more people covered.”
Keefe, meanwhile, said she was delighted to be joining Shattock’s leadership team as commercial director and building on the work already underway as they navigate the challenges of today’s protection market.
“I believe in the strength and quality of our people and know that we are well positioned for continued successful growth as we move forwards,” she remarked.
