Generali’s general counsel for its UK branch Matthew Dumbrell (pictured, left) has been appointed as chairperson of the International Underwriting Association’s (IUA) Legal and Regulatory committee and will be working with the IUA’s secretariat to set the group’s future agenda and lead discussions among members.

The Legal and Regulatory Committee monitors the development of legal, regulatory, international trade, accounting, and taxation changes affecting the London Market. The committee also coordinates IUA responses to official consultation exercises and represents member interests to the government and supervisory bodies in the UK and overseas.

Aside from Dumbrell, Dominic How (pictured, centre), the general counsel at HSB Engineering Insurance, a part of Munich Re, and Faye Ingham (pictured, right) the compliance officer of reinsurance – UK branch SMF16 at Swiss Re, have also been appointed as deputy chairs to the committee.

“Our Legal and Regulatory Committee is made up of senior legal counsel from across the market who provide expert insight and analysis of the legislative framework governing our sector,” said Helen Dalziel, the IUA’s director of public policy, about the new appointments. “Their support is essential to helping the IUA pursue its mission of securing an optimal trading environment for our sector and Matthew Dumbrell is ideally positioned to lead the group. I look forward to working with him and two new deputy chairs.”

The new appointees move into roles previously occupied by chair Laura Phillips, head of Legal, Risk & Compliance at HDI Global Specialty – UK, and deputy chair Brendan Baxter, regional head of Legal and Compliance at Allianz Commercial.

The IUA, which was founded in 1998, is the representative body for companies in London providing international and wholesale re/insurance. It was created through the merger of the London International Insurance and Reinsurance Market Association (LIRMA) and the Institute of London Underwriters (ILU).
