An insurance salesman from Stoke-on-Trent has found social media fame after posting comic videos, as reported in an article by the BBC.
Luke Hamnett, known for his character named ‘Matthew’s Mum’, began posting comedic content on social media platforms during lockdown at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He now has 1.5 million followers on TikTok and Instagram combined.
“It’s on such a bigger scale now than what I thought it would be,” said Hamnett.
Hamnett has a background in teaching and studied drama at Glyndwr University in Wrexham, according to the website of HD Management, Hamnett’s previous talent agency.
Hamnett began to post lip sync videos on Facebook during lockdown to make his family laugh during the tough time. He uploaded a video of his ‘Matthew’s Mum’ character in 2021 which reached 100k views in an hour.
“It was so overwhelming, I thought ‘I don’t know how to react to this’,” he said.
Hamnett continued to upload videos along with his mother and has received messages from his followers which detail how his videos have been helpful getting them through the difficult times brought by the pandemic.
Hamnett posts up to four videos in one day, with his videos on TikTok reaching a total of 56 million likes. His fame has allowed him to treat his mother, and he has received invitations to film premieres.
Now living in Manchester, he is planning to become a full-time influencer while having a social media manager of his own. He is also planning to perform in his own stand-up comedy show and create a podcast with his mother.
