Insurance fraudsters head north

Insurance fraudsters are allegedly heading north amid a reportedly more relaxed claims management landscape.

A report by ITIJ said insurance fraud “professional enablers” have moved from England to Scotland due to the latter’s lack of regulations addressing the issue. Last April, the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) opened up its membership to the insurance industry supply chain – defendant solicitors, investigators, loss adjustors, and third-party administrators.

These affiliate members gained access to fraud intelligence alerts issued by the Bureau and will contribute to cross-industry investigations. Insurance law firm DWF was among the new members. The report said it supports the move to disrupt insurance fraud in Scotland.

"Intelligence and data are at the very heart of our business and we leverage this in fighting and disrupting fraud across all of our service lines. The industry fight against fraud is only ever enhanced by working collaboratively,” said Nigel Teasdale, head of motor, fraud, costs & claimant teams at DWF.

For IFB head of intelligence Stephen Dalton, DWF becoming a member is an important step in developing a “truly holistic counter-fraud strategy that encompasses the insurance industry’s trusted supply chain”.
