Howden Capital Markets & Advisory (HCMA) has appointed Des Potter (pictured) as an independent non-executive director (NED) for its UK operations. Potter, who became a special advisor to Lloyd’s finance chief Burkhard Keese in 2022, brings more than 25 years of diverse experience in reinsurance broking, investment banking, and corporate finance to HCMA.
Throughout his career, Potter has held prominent leadership positions at Barclays Bank, Aon Benfield Securities, and Guy Carpenter Securities. At Barclays, he served as insurance head and also led commodities and trade finance. During his time at Aon Benfield Securities, Potter was a board member and capital markets managing director.
At Guy Carpenter Securities, Potter held the position of managing director, leading a team of experts in mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, and strategic financial advisory services. He also played a significant role in originating and structuring insurance-linked securities transactions for European insurers and global reinsurers.
After retiring from Guy Carpenter in December 2021, Potter launched Des Potter Consultancy Limited. Through this consultancy, he established and authorised London Bridge 2 PCC, a risk transformation vehicle that had facilitated US$750 million in capital raises via 13 deals by the end of last year. Potter also supported the expansion of the Ki Algorithmics underwriting platform.
“We are pleased to welcome Des Potter as a NED in London,” HCMA chief executive Jarad Madea commented. “His extensive and impressive track record in reinsurance, capital markets, and risk management will be a valuable addition as we continue to drive growth and innovation. We welcome Des’s contribution to further enhance our strategic direction in the UK market.”
Potter added: “I am delighted to be joining HCMA UK. I have known the team for many years and have been extremely impressed by the innovative and client-focussed way the business has developed. I look forward to contributing to its continued success.”
