A Deliveroo rider who was involved in a collision with a rental van near the centre of Bristol is set to get some relief from the food delivery firm’s decision last May to provide its riders with free accident insurance.
A spokesperson for the Avon and Somerset Police told BristolLive the man was in a serious but stable condition in the hospital.
According to BristolLive, the cyclist was trapped under the van with the back wheel crushing his neck. Fortunately a doctor who was getting coffee nearby managed to rally a crowd of onlookers to push the van backwards and off the cyclist’s neck. The doctor, Vinay Pandya, then delivered first aid.
Deliveroo told the news organisation that all of its food delivery riders are automatically covered with an insurance package whenever they are working.
The firm announced the decision to provide free accident insurance last May, and said 35,000 riders around the world would benefit from it. The policy protects both the riders themselves and their future earnings – up to £7,500 of medical expenses as well as up to 75% of average gross income.
For riders in the UK, both third party liability and accident insurance are 100% free with zero cost to riders, and hospital benefits up to £3,000.
“We know riders value the flexibility of being able to fit their work around their life, but they also deserve security if they’re involved in an accident. This insurance gives riders security while they’re out delivering great food and maintains the flexible work they value,” said Deliveroo CEO and founder Will Shu when the announcement was made.
