While
Pool Re recognises the gaps in terrorism insurance, and
Beech Underwriting Agencies stresses that
there are alternatives beyond the government-backed market, another entity is doing its share to combat the spate of terror attacks in the UK.
Believed to be a first in the British market is Fleet Source’s suite of products and training services called “Terrorism Risk and Incident Prevention” (TRIP). Designed for operators and drivers of commercial fleet, TRIP aims to educate the sector on risks and precautions amid incidents related to VAAW (vehicle as a weapon) terrorism.
“Terrorists are opportunists, they know that using an HGV (heavy goods vehicle) as a weapon could maximise death and injury,” said Fleet Source managing director Nick Caesari. “Following the recent major VAAW incidents and with the UK being on a severe level of terrorist alert, we believed that Fleet Source had an obligation to the industry and the general public to invest in a dedicated set of solutions to help address this important issue.”
Caesari continued: “With over 35% of our workforce being from a military and policing background, with many having extensive counter-terrorism experience, we felt that we were perfectly positioned to help educate fleet operators, managers, and drivers in taking the necessary precautions and to make sure they are doing absolutely everything possible to prevent their vehicle from being hijacked or stolen and used as a weapon in an attack.”
To be available initially are TRIP driver CPC (certificate of professional competence) training; TRIP manager training; and the TRIP policy & procedure pack. For every TRIP policy & procedure pack sold, Fleet Source will donate £25 to the UK Solidarity Fund, the fund set up by the British Red Cross following the terror attacks in Manchester and London.
“Having worked with Fleet Source on a number of programmes around driver engagement and safety, we have put forward delegates for the initial sessions,” said Graham Bellman, group fleet director at Travis Perkins. “With a large UK-based fleet, we are keen to keep our drivers informed and aware of the many situations they may face as a part of their role.”
Caesari added: “We are doing our part, as we feel everyone should, in working together to help reduce the risks from terrorism and protect the British public.”
