Peter Maskell, an established Birmingham businessman and CEO of insurance firm BHSF, has announced he will be retiring at the end of August 2017 after nearly 54 years in the industry.

After spending over 34 years at the main office of Britannic Assurance, he joined BHSF as chief executive in 1999. During his tenure, he oversaw the firm’s growth from a provincial not-for-profit health insurer to a nationwide health and wellbeing company with a turnover exceeding £43 million.

In the past few years, Maskell headed the establishment of BHSF’s UK and Ireland occupational health division, supplementing a HR and employee benefits business supporting 3,000 client organizations across the nation.

He has also been a member of the councils of the Chamber of Commerce, the West Midlands CBI and the Birmingham Insurance Institute, where he had two terms as president.

Jane Dale, chairman of BHSF, told The Birmingham Mail: “Peter has led the company through a period of tremendous growth over the last 17 years and along the way has built an outstanding management team, to support our continued success. During his time at BHSF, the business has accomplished a significant amount and this is testament to Peter’s long-serving commitment and dedication.”

Maskell added: “Working at BHSF and helping the business to grow during my tenure has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career. Today, BHSF is a diverse group with three businesses – health insurance, employee benefits and occupational health, and therefore has a solid operating position in the market to carry us forward.

“I am proud of everything we have achieved and I’m confident in the team’s ability to continue to grow BHSF following my retirement.”

The company has started a process to find Maskell’s successor, who will be appointed next summer.
