The global specialty (re)insurer Canopius Group has announced the appointment of Mark Newman as chief executive officer for the UK.
According to a Press release, Newman, who currently serves the group as CEO for the Asia Pacific region, is set to take up his new role from January 1, 2023. Meanwhile, interim UK CEO Kate Roy will step away from the position on December 31, 2023, retaining her role as group chief operating officer.
Newman will join the board of directors of Canopius Managing Agents (CMA), pending approval by the UK’s Prudential Regulation Authority.
Canopius revealed that it is now actively shortlisting internal and external candidates to succeed Newman as APAC CEO and noted that Newman will continue to support the APAC region to ensure a smooth leadership continuation.
Newman joined Canopius as APAC CEO in 2016, becoming part of its global leadership team in 2021. In addition, he has been a Canopius Asia Pte. Ltd (CAPL) board member and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) approved Principal Officer since 2016. In the Press release accompanying the announcement, it was noted that during his tenure as APAC CEO for Canopius, the unit has increased its revenue five-fold, exceeding all the KPIs in its strategic plan.
Commenting on the appointment, Neil Robertson, Canopius Group CEO, said the group is “thrilled” Newman will be leading its UK business, citing how he has overseen the successful evolution of its APAC operations, exceeding the five-year growth plan for its Singapore and Australia businesses.
“[Mark] has proven himself to be the right candidate to take on the role of UK CEO,” he said, “and I’m confident that he will build on his strong track record and assist our UK teams execute their growth plans.”
Newman added: “For me, it’s always all about the people - I have been privileged to be part of an excellent APAC team, and one that I’m also very proud of - it’s that collective success that has qualified me for this new and exciting role. I look forward to working with all our UK colleagues too, in striving to take Canopius to the next level.”
