Brit Insurance has partnered with GT Scholars, a UK-based social mobility organisation, to launch online digital challenges that help young people access career opportunities in insurance and build employability skills.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has recently found that diversity remains an issue in the industry despite most insurers having diversity and inclusion initiatives in place. There is a disproportionately low number of women working in insurance, as well as low representation of black, Asian and minority ethnic employees.

The industries young people want to work in also differ greatly from the jobs available in the country. One study emphasised the importance of career support after revealing that people aged 14 to 18 are not sufficiently educated about the workforce and areas of demand, creating a disconnect between aspiration and opportunity. In addition, children as young as seven already face limits on their career aspirations due to barriers to social mobility and their tendency to only consider jobs they know of.

The GT Scholars x Brit Insurance digital challenges provide an alternative to work experience, accessible to young people throughout the UK and made to build their interest in the insurance industry and establish employability skills regardless of the career they ultimately pursue.

“The quality of careers advice and the availability and awareness of work experience opportunities varies across the country,” said Temi Kamson, CEO of GT Scholars. “This often depends on the school that you attend and your postcode. As a social mobility organisation, our goal is to ensure that young people across the UK have the opportunity to access careers support and discover new careers that they may have otherwise not considered.”

The online digital challenges are open to anyone aged 11 to 18. All challenge participants will be able to receive a certificate of completion. Winners of the GT Scholars x Brit Insurance challenge will win a share of £3,000 and be invited to take part in a career insight day with up to two family members.
