Independent specialist insurance and reinsurance broker BMS has announced that Ian Gormley will become its new UK CEO, effective immediately.
Since joining BMS as managing director of global risks in 2012, Gormley has led its specialty business to become one of the most respected platforms in London, propelling it into a multi-faceted global business with more than £100 million in revenues.
Gormley will report to Nick Cook, chief executive of BMS Group.
In a statement, Cook said that Gormley’s “exceptional strategic vision and leadership of BMS within the UK” marked him as the standout candidate for the job.
“He is BMS through to his very fingertips and is highly regarded, enormously smart and has shown inspirational leadership skills. Ian has made a real contribution to BMS’s cultural values ensuring that D&I is integral to the company’s DNA,” Cook added.
Cook also said the appointment would allow him more time to focus on the global strategic growth across BMS Group.
Gormley said he was thrilled to take on the role. “We plan to more than double the scale of our specialty business through selective growth with partners where we can bring in new capability or enrich current expertise. BMS is a destination for talent and has a very inclusive culture in which we give our colleagues or teams the support they need to succeed,” he said.
“I look forward to bringing my passion for BMS’s people-led culture and my sector expertise to deliver the strongest possible outcomes for clients around the world.”
Gormley also built out BMS’s energy presence, developed a best-in-class property team, advanced the financial products division, and established a global risks team in Bermuda for property/liability and specialty reinsurance. Prior to BMS, Gormley worked for seven years at Glencairn and has a background both in underwriting and broking.
