Jonathan Bines (pictured), who started his insurance career at Marsh in 1998, is now chief commercial officer at AFL Insurance Brokers Ltd.
The two-decade industry veteran served as vice president at the brokerage giant before moving to Jardine Lloyd Thompson in 2005. Bines also spent time at Integro Insurance Brokers, as head of UK multinational practice, prior to his return to JLT where he most recently held the position of senior partner for specialty property & casualty.
Commenting on his new role at the independent Lloyd’s broker, Bines described AFL as having “a palpable energy and positivity,” as well as “a real sense of purpose” – saying “it’s difficult to imagine a more exciting opportunity in the London Market today.”
Steadily expanding both its wholesale and retail capabilities, AFL recently set up a marine division and beefed up its property & casualty businesses and corporate unit.
“This is a significant appointment for us; Jonathan undoubtedly has the calibre and experience to help drive the company forwards,” noted AFL chief executive Bob Finch. “As one of the founding members of the London Integro start-up, Jonathan understands the nuances and needs of this fast-paced, dynamic environment. I’m very much looking forward to working closely with him as we continue to build AFL.”
Meanwhile AFL chair Toby Esser believes the “talented practitioner” has tons to contribute, calling Bines “a natural, cultural fit” for the firm.
“I share a vision with Bob and Toby of what can be achieved and I’m delighted to have been invited to join the company at this time in its evolution,” added Bines, whose focus will be on broking production, strategy, and efficiency as he assists across all operations at AFL.
