At least 20 known figures in the insurance industry have made it to the latest Sunday Times Rich List, the definitive roster of the wealthiest people in the UK published over the weekend.

For 2017, half of the insurance bigwigs on the annual list saw their rankings rise, while the other half dropped from their spots last year.

With a net worth of £895 million, brothers Sir Roger and Peter De Haan, of the Saga Group, ranked the highest among people whose sources of wealth included insurance business. This year, they placed 148th on the overall list, down from 126th in 2016.

The second richest insurance businessman in the UK is BGL Group founder Douw Gerbrand Steyn, who climbed to 152nd with a net worth of £850 million. He was followed by Admiral founder and chief executive Henry Engelhardt, who slipped to 180th with a net worth of £720 million. Steyn and Engelhardt were tied at 164th on the 2016 list.

Sir Peter Wood, founder of Direct Line and Esure, was estimated to be worth £693 million and the fourth wealthiest insurance tycoon, as his overall ranking went up to 187th from 192nd.

Among all insurance bosses, the biggest “riser” in the rankings was the “King of the London insurance market” himself, John Charman, who skyrocketed to 382nd from 640th with a net worth of £300 million.

The biggest losers, meanwhile, were Angus Ball and Keith Morris of Sabre Insurance, who were worth £185 million each. They both landed in the 607th spot after also tying at 460th last year.

A new entry to the list is insurance magnate and UKIP donor Arron Banks. The Leave.EU campaign co-founder was ranked 453rd with a net worth of £250 million.
