A TV pop star has blasted his insurance company for refusing to insure his car – because he is a musician.

“I was going through my details with the guy on the phone but when I said what I did, the guy from Liberty said, ‘sorry we don’t insure musicians’,” the singer said in the report.
Dublin-based Murphy said he was stunned when, despite having a clean licence and a no-claims bonus, he was turned down by the insurer when reapplying for a policy. While he had been a customer of Liberty Insurance for a number of years, he hadn’t renewed his policy last year so was treated as a new customer.
The report claimed Liberty Insurance had confirmed its policy on not insuring musicians, adding that the firm said it was “an underwriting issue with the company itself.”
Victor Finn, CEO of the Irish Music Rights Organisation, called the move “incredibly unfair and discriminatory.” He continued: “How are musicians to travel to gigs? Many drive themselves.”
Murphy said he hopes to speak with the management at the insurer and hopes they will welcome him back as a customer.
