With a few days off for the festive break, many will be heading to the cinema to see the latest instalment of the Star Wars franchise – perhaps even dreaming of flying some of the famous ships from the movies.
But how much would they actually cost to insure? The results might well bring you back down to earth with a bump.
The Corellian Corvette, or Blockade Runner – from 1977’s Episode IV, A New Hope – comes in as the most expensive Star Wars ship to insure at an eye-watering £4,643,460, new research from InsureTheGap has revealed.
The famous Millennium Falcon comes in second, costing Han Solo a cool £414,533 a year – largely due to the risk that being a smuggler and rebel entails, coupled with the litany of modifications made to the iconic freighter, according to the report.
To gather the data, InsureTheGap – which offers guaranteed asset protection insurance online – built profiles for its eight chosen vehicles, considering standard aspects such as weight and size, as well as some that required a little more “artistic licence,” such as maximum speed in atmosphere.
When it comes to risky occupations, Luke Skywalker will also pay the price in insuring his X-Wing. Thanks to spending his time as a rebel and a Jedi Knight, he faces an insurance bill of £217,323.
Bounty hunter Boba Fett’s Slave 1 ship would also cost him an arm and a leg, racking up a total of £169,624.
Sith Lord Darth Vader would have to part with some serious cash due to the mod-cons on his Tie Advanced X1, with additions such as hyperdrive bumping the price up to £112,932.
Sebulba’s Podracer, seen in The Phantom Menace, is described as the “sportscar of the Star Wars world.” Due to it being cobbled together from two engines, it’s classed as heavily-modified, but comes in at a more reasonable £9,545 – despite the undeniable danger of podracing.
Second from last is Jabba’s sail barge, the Khetanna, which InsureTheGap recommends as the top Star Wars pick for getting the most bang for your buck. Described as “basically a giant floating pub complete with bands and giant cannons,” it will cost Jabba just £5,483 to insure.
In last as the very cheapest Star Wars ship to insure, is Luke Skywalker’s X-34 Landspeeder, with a top speed comparable to a Ford Focus ST, according to the insurance specialists. Luke gets away with a premium of just £544 – a reasonable price for most 19-year-olds!
