Automaker Ford UK is teaming up with insurance provider By Miles to boost its usage-based auto insurance offering.
By Miles will be launching its new pay-as-you-drive auto insurance later this year for Ford customers. It requires no additional hardware, utilising the on-board connected vehicle systems Ford has built into its vehicles. The new partnership marks By Miles as the first insurer in the UK to use Ford’s connected vehicle data for a usage-based insurance offering.
Ford explained that it is making its connected vehicle data available for insurers to use to help its customers benefit from a usage-based approach to insurance, as people commute to work less.
“The way we travel has undergone a huge shift that could well have a long-lasting impact. We want to champion the changing needs of drivers who continue to work from home,” said Ford of Europe director of enterprise connectivity Mark Harvey. “Working with By Miles, we aim to use connected vehicle data to help deliver a full suite of innovative new products and services for our customers.”
“The way insurance used to work may not work for everybody. Whatever the new normal looks like, it’s clear that drivers’ needs are changing quickly – and people want fairer, more flexible cover that reflects that,” added By Miles founder and CEO James Blackham.
The insurance program will be offered to Ford customers that own newer automobile models with FordPass Connect modem. The customers simply purchase a By Miles policy and then give their car permission to measure the miles driven and share it with the insurance provider, thus allowing them to pay for their insurance per mile.
No additional device needs to be plugged into a driver’s car to participate in the pay-per-mile auto insurance program.
