Newly published Department for Transport data shows 80% of car drivers (93% on weekends) are now back using their vehicles on a regular basis, but British insurance giant Aviva is concerned that not all precautions are being taken.
“As increasing numbers begin to drive more regularly, there are worrying signs that some may be throwing caution to the wind,” stated Aviva’s global strategy and insight head Sarah Applegate.
“Our own research has uncovered that more than a quarter (28%) of motorists have not performed any safety checks on their vehicles whatsoever during lockdown, with many neglecting to make all-important checks to their tyre treads (68%), engine oil levels (68%), lights (67%), or tyre pressures (60%).”
More than 2,000 UK adults participated in the survey conducted by Censuswide on behalf of the insurer.
Applegate went on to comment: “Motorists will inevitably feel encouraged by the lifting of lockdown restrictions, but it is vital to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. To keep our roads as safe as possible, drivers should remember to carry out basic checks when using their cars.
“If people have any concerns about their vehicles, they should ask a professional mechanic to investigate, particularly before making longer journeys to re-connect with family and friends.”
Just as importantly, drivers must ensure that they have the appropriate insurance policy in place.
“If people are likely to use their car significantly more or less post-lockdown, or need to add or remove drivers from their policies, they should inform their insurance provider as soon as possible so their cover can be updated,” added the Aviva executive.
